During the Spanish Administration, Rizal province was originally known as the district of Morong. Morong was composed of 26 towns, its territory a combination between the provinces of Tondo and Laguna, both established provinces before.
In 1853, the political division of Morong was formed. The towns of Antipolo, Boso – Boso, Cainta, Taytay, Morong, Baras, Tanay, Pililla, Angono, Binangonan and Jalajala were under one province with the capital situated in Morong. Still under the rule of the province of Manila.
In June 5 1901, the first Philippine commission held a historic meeting at the Pasig Catholic Church which discussed the organization of civil government. Don Juan Sumulong of Antipolo supported the proposal removing the political division of Morong from the authority of Manila, and thus creating a separate province for the whole district. In effect the assembly concluded that the district of Morong was changed to a province, and that its title, named after the country’s national hero, Rizal.
